Teaching, Talks & Workshops

  • Democracy & Human Rights after the Arab Uprisings

Many states and societies across the so-called Arab World witnessed protests, upheavals, and political violence during 2011 and since. In this seminar, we compare various protest movements and authoritarian regimes across the region since 2011 and focus on explaining the various outcomes of these contentious episodes.

I have taught this course at graduate level at the University of Potsdam and the Hertie School of Governance.

  • Fieldwork Methods

In this block seminar, the participants will learn the advantages and disadvantages of different fieldwork methods for data collection most commonly used by social scientists, such as qualitative interviews, field surveys, archival work, and ethnographic observations. Students will learn how to plan fieldwork missions and conduct a risk assessment based on the research topic, fieldwork context, and the research method they choose to employ to gather data in the field.

I have taught this course at graduate level at the Hertie School of Governance.

  • Fieldwork Safety

I developed several block seminars and workshops providing an introduction to risk assessment tools and risk mitigation strategies for fieldwork in challenging research environments. I start by introducing ways to think and detect fieldwork risks before, during, and after the field and then dives into behavioral and preventative measures that can be taken to mitigate these. The courses also include a discussion on technological possibilities to minimize specific risks associated with the surveillance of communication and data.

I have taught seminars and workshops on fieldwork safety for researchers online and offline at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Florence, Kings College London, the German Institute for Global Area Studies, the Berlin University Alliance, the University of Marburg, and the University of Gießen.

  • Academic Freedom

My lectures on academic freedom describe the global trend of declining academic freedom based on available datasets, reports and studies. I provide context specificif examples ranging from persecution of and discplinary measures against scholars to academic self-censorship based on illustrative examples from recent developments, case studies and monitoring reports.

I have conducted and facilitated workshops on academic freedom for diplomats working on science diplomacy, parliamentarians and their staffers working on science policy, and civil society groups working to advocate and defend academic freedom.

  • Politics, Society & Culture of Morocco

For my research I have lived two years in Morocco based on my experiences and analysis I have developed professional education workshops for diplomats and staff working in international cooperation going to Morocco. The personalized workshops include an introduction to the history of Morocco and contemporary politics and societal debates, as well as cultural aspects.

I have conducted and facilitated workshops on Morocco for the professional training programme of the German International Development Agency (GIZ).
